Howard Marsh Restoration

The Howard Marsh Restoration Project, funded by federal resources, focused on the conservation and enhancement of 243 acres of vital coastal wetlands along Lake Erie’s southern shore. This comprehensive initiative introduced several key features to improve public access and enjoyment of the natural area:

  1. Water Access Improvements:
    • A new boat launch facility was constructed to provide easier access for watercraft.
    • A floating kayak launch was installed, catering specifically to paddlers and enhancing recreational opportunities.
  2. Pedestrian Amenities:
    • The project included the construction of an extensive 1,077-foot boardwalk trail, allowing visitors to explore and appreciate the wetland ecosystem up close.
  3. Improved Accessibility:
    • To accommodate visitors, a spacious 32,000-square-foot gravel parking lot was developed, ensuring ample space for cars and small watercraft trailers.

These enhancements not only protect the delicate wetland ecosystem but also create opportunities for the public to engage with and appreciate this important natural resource. The project successfully balances conservation efforts with recreational access, promoting environmental awareness and outdoor activities in the Lake Erie region.
